Dr. Kristin Severson to Serve as Honorary Chair for St. Croix County Memory Walk 2007

The St. Croix County Memory Walk will take place on September 15 at The Deerfield, 1127 West Eighth Street, New Richmond. The event helps raise awareness and funds to support local programs for people with Alzheimer’s disease, their families and caregivers. All dollars raised through Memory Walk are used in the Greater Wisconsin Chapter to provide support and services to the persons affected and communities in our service area.

Kristin Severson , D.O., from Hudson Physicians and on staff at Hudson Hospital is this year’s Honorary Chair. Dr. Severson is certified in internal medicine and geriatric medicine and sees patients at many of the area’s skilled nursing facilities as well as in private practice.

“Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia in this country and unlike some other types of dementia, it is irreversible,” says Dr. Severson. “Nearly 11,000 persons with Alzheimer’s live in western Wisconsin. St. Croix County alone has 1,100 persons diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. And the number of patients I see in St. Croix County affected by Alzheimer’s is growing.”

“The Alzheimer’s Association provides excellent services to the community in the form of local support groups, care consultations, and training for professionals,” says Dr. Severson. “I have worked with several families who were able to keep their loved ones at home thanks to the support and resources they received by working with the Alzheimer’s Association.”

“As honorary chair of this year’s Memory Walk, I have three key messages I wish to convey. One, we need to get better at recognizing the signs of Alzheimer’s early. Two, family members should not be afraid to ask their doctor if what they are noticing in their loved one is normal or not. And, finally, know that you are not alone when it comes to living with Alzheimer’s or being the caregiver of someone who has it.”

“Often families don’t know where to turn for help when facing Alzheimer’s. I’m passionate about taking part in this year’s Memory Walk because I’ve seen the good that the Alzheimer’s Association has done in our local community. Getting involved is one way to spread the word that help is available,” adds Dr. Severson.

Dr. Severson will host an “Ask the Doctor” forum immediately following the walk at The Deerfield. People with general questions related to dementia may submit a written question during the walk registration.

Hudson Hospital and Hudson Physicians organizations are sponsoring the event through financial support and walk teams. Teams are forming now. Registration takes place the day of the event at 8:30 with the walk officially beginning at 9:30 a.m. For more information or to join the hospital and clinic walk team, contact Christopher Cook at (715) 531-6052.
