Upcoming Free Community Health Seminars

Computer-assisted Joint Replacement Surgery
Wednesday, January 31, Noon to 1:30 p.m.
Robert Knowlan, MD, St.Croix Orthopaedics

Thousands of Americans undergo joint replacement each year. Whether arthritis, trauma, or the natural wear of joints causes the ongoing pain, joint replacement surgery improves the quality of life for many. The ultimate goal of this surgery is to relieve pain, improve mobility and restore as much functional independence as possible.

Dr. Knowlan will share his expertise on one of the latest techniques that offers potential benefits to patients – computer-assisted joint replacement surgery. Similar to a GPS navigation system found in cars, this image-guided surgery system provides the “road map” and supports surgeons in making more informed decisions about the patient’s anatomy and determines precise positioning and joint alignment. The added benefits with this technology are many including reduced recovery time. Join us to learn more. A computer demonstration of this new technology will be available for viewing.

Menopause and Natural Hormone Replacement Therapy
Monday, February 19, 2007, 6:30-8 p.m.
Stephanie Johnson, Certified Nurse Midwife, St. Croix Obstetrics & Women’s Health (formerly St. Croix Women’s Center), Hudson
Michelle Schneider, Register Pharmacist and co-owner of Freeman Drug, Inc. River Falls (Extensive training in bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) and pharmaceutical compounding)

What is Natural Hormone Replacement Therapy? Is it right for you? Recent studies have changed how health professionals use hormone therapy after menopause. Menopause is a natural change in a woman’s life journey that doesn't necessarily require treatment. However, symptoms of hormonal change during perimenopause and menopause can be difficult to handle. If you have insomnia, mood swings, hot flashes, cloudy thinking, heavy menstrual periods, or other menopause symptoms, treatment can help you manage this transition more comfortably.

During this seminar, Stephanie and Michelle will discuss the symptoms of perimenopause and menopause, and give you a better understanding of the natural process. More importantly, you’ll be presented with many options to help bring your body back into comfort and balance – including, traditional clinical and complimentary treatments, natural HRT, bioidentical HRT, nutrition suggestions and more. Whether you are undergoing hormone replacement or weighing the risks and benefits of starting, you will find information shared in this seminar valuable in making your own informed health
care decisions.

Eating Right to Lower Your Blood Pressure
Wednesday, February 28, Noon to 1:30 p.m.
Trudy Kapaun , Registered Dietitian, Hudson Hospital Nutrition Care

If you're like many people today, with a busy schedule and long list of things to do, you may often find yourself "grabbing a bite" to eat whenever you have the chance. Unfortunately, many of the most convenient foods also contain high levels of salt and fat, and are lowest in providing healthy nutrients.

Changing your eating habits to lower your blood pressure may not be as difficult as it seems. This seminar will introduce you to the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet, give you useful tools to get you started and help you to effectively read food nutrition labels. Free blood pressure checks are available from 6:00 to 6:30 p.m.
